How Solar PV Systems work

A solar PV panel consists of many cells made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity generated, however the panels don’t need direct sunlight to work and can even work on cloudy days.

Solar PV systems are made up of several panels, with each panel generating around 355W of energy in strong sunlight.

The system generates direct current (DC), which an inverter we install with the system, turns this into alternating current (AC), which your household runs on, allowing you to use this within your property or export this back to the grid

Is solar the right option for me?
Do you have the space for a system?

Space is a key consideration. The average system size is around 4.2kWp and this will typically take up around 25m2 roof area. An unshaded, South facing roof is ideal for maximum electrical output. East or West facing roofs should still be considered, but North facing roofs are not recommended. A system facing East or West will yield around 15-20% less energy than one facing directly South.

Do I Need Permission to install a Solar PV system?

Solar PV panels are considered ‘permitted developments’ and often don’t require planning permission. However, exceptions apply and it’s best to check with your local planning office for guidance. If you live in a listed building, conservation area or national park, additional restrictions may apply.

If you’re planning to install a solar PV system in your home, you must register it with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The DNO is the company responsible for bringing electricity to your home. Usually, your installer will register the device for you. Upon our visit we make you aware of the DNO application required and apply for this on your behalf.

Getting the most out of your Solar PV System

There are a number of things that can link to your solar PV system to help get the most out of it. Some of these things include:

  • Solar hot water diverter

A hot water diverter looks for excess solar energy and will harness this energy to carry out certain tasks such as filling the hot water tank. This not only helps to use the excess but also cut down your usage from Gas or Oil.

  • Battery Storage Systems

Battery storage systems can be work with existing systems that are already installed to harness more from the solar. This is known as an AC coupled system. They can also be installed as part of a new solar PV systems where the solar inverter also controls the batteries. This is known as a hybrid system.

Battery storage systems help to store any excess solar during the day to be used at night. In the winter they can also be charged through the night on a low rate tariff and discharged throughout the day when rates are high.

  • Bird Protection

Another thing to consider when installing a Solar PV system is birds nesting under the panels. If you live in a remote area then it's worth considering having bird protection installed to help keep the birds from nesting under the system.
